All lab personnel are required to take the following classes in order to operate in the Biomedical Optics Lab:
General Lab Safety and Hazardous Materials Orientation
Class includes toxicology, recognition of hazards, personal protective equipment, understanding MSDS's, proper storage of chemicals, proper disposal of chemicals, fire safety and general safety rules.
This class is mandatory for all new faculty working in a science/research laboratory, new laboratory teaching assistants and other new laboratory staff. Any other interested persons are cordially invited to attend.
Biological Safety
Class includes safety guidelines and procedures for working with biohazardous materials and recombinant DNA molecules. UH policies, responsibilities and requirements for research involving the use of biological materials. Bloodborne pathogen training is also provided.
Laser Safety
This course for users of laser equipment covers basic laser principles, safety procedures, laser terminology, equipment safety devices, regulations, lab inspections, documentation and record keeping, basic laser radiation biology, emergency burn procedures, eye protection, and University procedures.
Animal Care
For students who will be handling animals, please visit the following website and fill out all forms and attend all classes necessary for compliance with UH animal safety rules.
