William Chavez is currently an undergraduate student at the University of Houston. He’s pursuing a Biology degree while also pursuing a teaching certification with teaching Houston program here at the University of Houston. He’s currently also doing research at Texas Children’s Hospital in Point Of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) with the Emergency Medicine department. Upon graduating, he plans to attend medical school and pursue a career in reconstructive plastic surgery.
Karina Montero is an honors undergraduate student majoring in Electrical Engineering at the University of Houston. Interested in pursuing a Ph.D. In Biomedical Engineering upon graduation, she is eager to gain hands-on experience and learn about biomedical optics.
I am currently a sophomore at the University of Houston majoring in Health on the pre-nursing track. My goal is to become a registered nurse and then I would like to further my education to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner. I am a mental health and a Dream Act advocate. There is a huge mental health stigma in Hispanic communities and I would like to help get rid of that stigma by educating people on the importance of getting mental help when needed. I was born in Mexico and I came to the US in 2010. I feel very happy to be part of this program since there aren’t many opportunities available for undocumented students and I truly admire the American Heart Association for it.
I am a senior Biology undergraduate at the University of Houston. I am currently working at the lab under the American Heart Association HSI grant in order to explore what research in science looks like. My goal is to become a cardiovascular perfusionist and be able to apply this knowledge into innovations with the bypass machine.
I am currently a Biomedical Engineering undergraduate at the University of Houston on the premed track. My goal is to go into medical research and use the combination of engineering and medicine to advance cancer research.
